Soulforce to hold pro-gay rally at Focus on the Family

Soulforce, a national gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered organization, is holding a rally at the Focus on the Family headquarters in Colorado Springs this Saturday. The gathering is to protest Dr. James Dobson's discriminatory, and misleading, rhetoric about the homosexual community. Dr. Dobson hosts radio and television programs that reach millions of people through 21 languages in 161 countries. He is one of the most prominent ring-leaders in the anti-gay movement, funding policies and organizations that strive to eliminate basic civil liberties for homosexuals. Focus on the Family has produced a plethora of books, pamphlets, audio/visual materials, and websites that promote the false stereotypes of gays.

Some of Dr. Dobson's arguments against homosexuals include they are the leading facilitators of child molestation, they are emotionally unstable and unfit to raise children, and their lifestyle is one of spiritual and moral perversion. Dr. Dobson has built a foundation on mixing severely distorted scientific information regarding sexuality and gender with misrepresentations of Biblical scripture on which to base his wrongful analysis. His messages have helped create a fearful atmosphere in America that has resulted in growing hate and violence towards homosexuality.

The rally will begin with a march at 6:00pm, led by actor Chad Allen and Judy Shepard (executive director of the Mathew Shepard foundation), from Rampart Park to the entrance of Focus on the Family. Soulforce will hold a brief vigil, followed by a free concert by Broadway star Billy Porter at 8:30pm. The aim of the rally is to bring Focus on the Family the message "Dr. Dobson—Learn from history and end your religion-based discrimination against our community." The Soulforce Mission Statement:

"The purpose of Soulforce is freedom for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people from religious and political oppression through the practice of relentless nonviolent resistance."
