Democrats take control of both House and Senate, Rumsfeld steps down
As the elections continue to play out, today in an unexpected turn of events Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld stepped down from his position. President Bush made the announcement after the soon-to-be Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi (who is set to be the first woman to take the title), called for his resignation. The Republicans took quite a blow, losing both houses to the Democrats as many people casted their votes in echo of their anger about the war, and Rumsfeld was obviously the sacrificial lamb for the White House's quagmire. Too bad we couldn't get the entire herd.
President Bush has nominated the former CIA Director Robert Gates to take his place. As we wait for more in-depth information about Gates and his ties to the Iran-Contra scandal, you can read the BBC's profile of Gates by clicking here. And lest we not neglect Rumsfeld's legacy by reflecting upon one of his most provocative statements that sums up the incompetent leadership we nauseously endured for six damning years under this man:
"Reports that say that something hasn't happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns -- the ones we don't know we don't know."
Good bye Rummy, and good grief...one down people yet with many, many more to go!
