European Court declares a re-evaluation of Iranian resistance organization
On December 12, 2006, the European Court of First Instance issued a press release calling for the annulment of the freezing of funds belonging to the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI). The Court’s statement within the release reads, “Not only has the OMPI been unable effectively to make known its views to the Council but, in the absence of any statement, in the contested decision, of the actual and specific ground justifying that decision, it has not been placed in a position to avail itself of its right of action before the Court.”
On December 12, 2006, the European Court of First Instance issued a press release calling for the annulment of the freezing of funds belonging to the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI). The Court’s statement within the release reads, “Not only has the OMPI [PMOI] been unable effectively to make known its views to the Council but, in the absence of any statement, in the contested decision, of the actual and specific ground justifying that decision, it has not been placed in a position to avail itself of its right of action before the Court.” Since May 2, 2001, the Iranian resistance organization has been included in a list of persons and organizations whose funds have been frozen for the sake of combating terrorism. The PMOI has sought action against the Council’s decision however, despite the list undergoing multiple revisions since, their removal has had yet to be considered. The announcement of the Council was celebrated all over the world by the global supporters of the PMOI as a crucial step towards the organization’s legitimacy amongst leading nations and the third option they offer in handling the nuclear conflict in Iran.
Since 1965, the People’s Mojahedin of Iran (whose women comprise 50% of the leadership) has been working to overthrow the brutally repressive regime of Iran’s dictators and mullahs in the name of human rights and social justice.
