FDA rules cloned animals are safe for consumption

The Food and Drug Administration announced today that the food produced by cloned pigs, goats and cattle has been deemed safe for public consumption.  The announcement came after five years of research and is a huge step towards making the U.S. the first country to allow cloned food to reach supermarket shelves, which can happen as soon as spring 2007.

Despite a majority of Americans opposed to this mad science, the FDA said that the food is indistinguishable from natural foods and is just as safe, claiming the meat and milk pose no health affects.   Due to these results, the agency said it will probably not recommend placing special labels to alert consumers if in fact they are buying cloned products, nor will there be any special safeguards to monitor its safety.  The food will not be shipped to stores until after the FDA conducts a public consultation, which is scheduled to run until April 2, 2007.  Consumer advocate groups are staunchly against releasing this relatively new technology into the food supply and encourage everyone to write to Congress and the FDA before the time for accepting public comments expires.
