New Report Reveals Iraqi Civilian Casualties Soon to Top One Million*
by Mandi Jones
The organization Just Foreign Policy has announced that civilian deaths in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003 will soon reach one million. Their tally is based on the only scientifically valid study of Iraqi deaths conducted by the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. At the time of publication, the study concluded that as of July 2006, as many as 654,965 Iraqis had been killed due to hostilities provoked by the 2003 invasion (read the study here). Since then, the number of deaths continue to soar as civil war between sectarian groups ravage the public sect while U.S. airstrikes have escalated to a new high since the invasion began.

Democracy Now! reported that U.S. troop levels in Iraq have now reached a new all-time high as well with 162,000 service members currently serving in the country. Over 3,600 U.S. troops and 1,000 contractors have also been killed in Iraq. The Nation has also recently released a gripping article about its 50 documented interviews with Iraq veterans concerning their experiences in combat and at home that has gained little media attention; if you are still unsure about what is really going on over there compared to what you're being fed by the corporate media, then read this piece entitled "Iraq Vets Bear Witness".
*At the time of publication, the death count was just above 999,000. The very day we published this article the amount topped the one million mark. The counter featured provides an updated tally.
