Special Feature: Reading of Gilman’s Novel Herland

5th December 2007

Audrey Gunn, Emily Shoemaker and Carol Ann West are students in Maurice Hamington’s Feminist Theory Class at the Metropolitan State College of Denver. To comply with a semester praxis class requirement, they decided to read Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s Herland and then perform a narrative podcast for Feisty Aphrodite. Separatist utopia and motherhood are two of the feminist theoretic positions taken up by Gilman.

Gunn, Shoemaker and West strongly believe in Gilman’s utopian vision, which they feel could provide a wonderful basis for the future. They hope you enjoy it as much as they have.

Kudos to Carol Ann, Emily, and Audrey as well as the folks at Feisty Aphrodite! The selection was well chosen and gives listeners a taste of how provocative Gilman’s novel is. The production and reading were excellent. Nice introduction.

Can we imagine a better world? Can we make it happen? Gilman gives us one vision. The work of Feisty Aphrodite and listening to Carol Ann, Emily, and Audrey gives me renewed hope for the future.

Wow, I thought this was an excellent reading about how Gilman’s novel. I think it shines a positive light that women can make a difference to this world, and are very capable of doing so. I believe that this reading send a message to women that men are not needed for them so make a positive impact on our society, but they are capable of gaining such success my themselves.

This is the first I have ever heard any part of Gilman’s Herland and I was very impressed. It’s hard for me to imagine such a world because of the views that have been etched so deeply in my mind about masculinity but such a world sounds beautiful to me. I can only dream of what it would be like to have life be only “a long cycle of motherhood” with “no war,” only new beginnings, no violent. I hope that someday the world we live in will be more comparable to the world in Herland. So I say thank you to Carol Ann, Emily and Audrey for showing me such a wonderful place.
