This section was put together to provide women with an array of media alternatives, resources and networks that help further our progress in exposing the world to women’s voices. It does not take a genius to understand how little women are respected in the mainstream media or allowed to participate in and behind the scenes of the newsroom. Everyday women and girls are forced to compete with the unhealthy, victimizing and superficial depictions of females that have permeated into everything from commercials and radio to websites and the silver screen. To remedy these negative stereotypes, we must not wait for the patriarchal media culture to get its act together and hope that the men in charge will someday have a change of heart to make some room for their female counterparts; even when women are occasionally given the lead we often find their perspectives are still somewhat hindered by male underwriters and corporate interests.

Gaining fair and accurate media representation is a task just like any other in that if we want it to happen, we must do it ourselves. More and more women are forming their own networks using the technology and opportunities of new media as their foundation to build a global movement that empowers women and honors their experiences and expertise. Feisty Aphrodite is simply adding another cornerstone for women to construct their own place where they may freely express themselves so we continue to build bridges across the transnational landscape of emerging feminist voices. Here you will find women’s news outlets, media activists, gender advocacy groups, networks working to support female journalists and watch dogs undertaking the urgent task to reinforce media accountability.
