Activism: Civil Rights

American Civil Liberties Union

“If the rights of society’s most vulnerable members are denied, everybody’s rights are imperiled.  The ACLU was founded by Roger Baldwin, Crystal Eastman, Albert DeSilver and others in 1920. We are nonprofit and nonpartisan and have grown from a roomful of civil liberties activists to an organization of more than 500,000 members and supporters. We handle nearly 6,000 court cases annually from our offices in almost every state.  We work also to extend rights to segments of our population that have traditionally been denied their rights, including Native Americans and other people of color; lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgender people; women; mental-health patients; prisoners; people with disabilities; and the poor.” - from their website

SaveOurCourts.org

“The Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, the nation’s oldest, largest, and most diverse civil rights coalition, and the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights Education Fund, the research and education arm of the civil rights coalition, have launched the Save Our Courts campaign to inform the public about the Bush administration’s extremist nominees to the federal courts.  The individuals charged with dispensing justice in our society have a direct impact on all of our rights, as well as on protecting the environment, workers, and consumers. The nation’s federal judges - who are appointed for life - must be moderate, fair and impartial. What could be more important than saving our courts from extremist ideologues?” - from their website
